Why Marc Guehi now misses England vs Switzerland

Crystal Palace No.6 Marc Guehi delivered another outstanding performance for England during Sunday’s 2-1 win over Slovakia.

The £18m man was forced to play 117 minutes of action on a tightrope after Umut Meler handed him a yellow card just three minutes into the Euro 2024 Round of 16 win, when a poor pass from Kieran Trippier but him in a difficult position at the back.

Nevertheless, the 23-year-old showed plenty of maturity to avoid a second booking, while also winning the flick on which assisted Jude Bellingham for that crucial 95th minute equaliser.

Unfortunately, despite the Crystal Palace star’s heroic efforts, Marc Guehi will miss England’s Euro 2024 quarter-final against Switzerland on Saturday, but why? Let’s take a look…

Sadly, that aforementioned yellow card after Trippier’s hospital pass means the man from Abidjan is now suspended for Saturday’s quarter-final.

Guehi was also yellow carded in the 0-0 draw against Slovenia in Group C, so he has received a one-match ban as a result of picking up two yellow cards in four Euro 2024 appearances.

However, the England international will be available to return for the semi-final if the Three Lions can overcome Switzerland.

It is a bitter blow for both Guehi and England, given how well the £50,000-a-week man has performed out in Germany.

Bellingham has already heaped praise on the Crystal Palace star’s displays, while Manchester United are also sitting up and taking notice of his performances at Euro 2024.

Crystal Palace fans can be proud

Not only Guehi, but Ebere Eze also played a big part against Slovakia.

The Crystal Palace No.10 was introduced in the 84th minute at a desperate time for England, with Gareth Southgate even bizarrely putting him at left wing-back.

Nevertheless, Eze dealt with the task well, showing fine concentration when defending his back post, while also making things happen going forward.

It was also the 26-year-old’s mishit effort which eventually led to Harry Kane nodding in the winner, so both Crystal Palace representatives in England’s win over Slovakia can be proud of their involvement.
