Runner falls to his death in German Black Forest cross country race

A participant in an cross country run in the German Black Forest fell about 100 metres down a slope and died, the mountain rescue service reported on Sunday.

Emergency services found his body in a very steep wooded area.

The 38-year-old was reported missing by relatives on Saturday afternoon when he did not reach the finish line of the race.

The mountain rescue service and police searched for the man in the Höllental Valley near Breitnau, south-east of Germany's south-western city of Freiburg, using a helicopter and drone team.

"Our team managed to access the area with the assistance of a rope and recovered the body in the early evening. The relatives were looked after on site," mountain rescue service operations manager Jan Steiert said in a statement.
