Alan Shearer & Micah Richards in agreement about Ezri Konsa after what happened in England's win last night

One Aston Villa player has caught the attention of punditry duo Micah Richards and Alan Shearer after England’s Euro 2024 win against Slovakia.

After the highs of representing Aston Villa over the 2023/24 campaign, Unai Emery’s star duo Ezri Konsa and Ollie Watkins are having a contrasting time with England.

The defender and the striker watched on as England’s Euro 2024 adventure almost came to a premature end on Sunday evening.

Konsa secured some minutes during extra time while Watkins watched the entirety of the fixture from the bench, seeing pundits Alan Shearer and Micah Richards comment on one Villa star’s chances in the quarter-final.

In what was almost a tragedy for Gareth Southgate’s side, there were plenty of talking points, one of which being Marc Guehi’s yellow card.

The Crystal Palace centre-back, who has been impressive at the tournament, picked up a booking after just three minutes and will subsequently miss the quarter-final.

As a result, pundits Richards, Shearer and Gary Lineker discussed England’s options in central defence as Switzerland await on Saturday.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, the trio were quizzed on who could replace Guehi, with Richards and Shearer quickly coming to a conclusion.

Shearer said, “Probably Konsa I’d go with, he’s the one who has been involved a bit more,” to which Richards agreed “I’d go with Konsa”.

Konsa may finally get his chance at Euro 2024

Ahead of the Slovakia battle, there was a lot of speculation regarding whether the Villa defender would start at left-back amid doubts over Kieran Trippier’s fitness.

Instead, the Newcastle United defender started, seeing Konsa introduced during extra time as the clock ran down.

Having played at both centre-back and right-back in Emery’s system across the 2023/24 campaign, the 26-year-old may finally get his chance to shine in Southgate’s XI at the Euros.

Leading up to the tournament, the Villa ace impressed on many occasions with the national team, making his omission from the action during the group stages a surprise.

Villa fans are all aware of what Konsa can do, with the opportunity now there for the versatile defender to impress on the international stage as England prepare for the quarter-final.
