‘I feel for him’: Jamie O’Hara says he actually feels sorry for one Newcastle player at Euro 2024

Newcastle United will have three players in the quarter-finals at Euro 2024.

Fabian Schar has already booked his spot in the next round with Switzerland after a stunning 2-0 victory over current holders Italy on Saturday.

The Swiss defender will meet two familiar faces in Kieran Trippier and Anthony Gordon in the quarter-final.

England knocked out Slovakia on Sunday, which saw Newcastle United shot-stopper Martin Dubravka exit the competition.

The Three Lions were far from convincing on the night as they needed a 95th-minute Jude Bellingham leveller to force the game to extra time.

Harry Kane’s effort in extra time secured a spot in the next round but it was a disappointing evening for Newcastle’s stars.

Trippier once again struggled while playing out of position at left-back and was replaced after picking up an injury while Gordon was an unused substitute.

Gordon has played just a few minutes at Euro 2024, which came in England’s final group game against Slovenia.

And with Manchester City star Phil Foden struggling off the left-hand side, Jamie O’Hara sympathised with the Newcastle winger last night.

O’Hara delivers Anthony Gordon verdict as England scrape through

England appear to be crying out for width on the left-hand side but Southgate seems reluctant to use Gordon.

The Newcastle star had impressed during a warm-up game against Iceland and even caught the eye in his brief cameo at Euro 2024.

But he was forced to watch on from the dugout last night as England struggled to create opportunities down the left-hand side.

And O’Hara told talkSPORT that he has felt sorry for Gordon during the tournament in Germany.

“I feel for Gordon. The game was crying out for him. I felt for Gordon. I did. Because that game really, in my opinion, was crying out for someone who could get to the byline,” the former Tottenham man said.

Gordon deserves England chance

The balance down the left-hand side is completely off for England at the moment, with the combination of Trippier and Foden not clicking.

Gordon looked bright during his brief display from the bench against Slovenia and introducing him into the side would go a long way to solving that issue.

However, Southgate opted to bring on Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze over the Newcastle star last night as England searched for a goal.

England are clearly lacking width on the left-hand side and Gordon would certainly provide that, as well as a player capable of making runs in behind.

It will be interesting to see if Southgate makes changes against Switzerland on Saturday and after another underwhelming display from Foden, many will be calling for Gordon to get an opportunity.
