Tottenham Hotspur are said to be closing in on a deal to sign Leeds United talent Archie Gray after a whirlwind weekend, and Fabrizio Romano has provided a new update this morning.
Gray, 18, has attracted the attention of many Premier League clubs and big-hitters across Europe after a wonderful 2023-24 term which started with his debut on the opening day, playing more than 50 times.
His form saw him shine at right-back, in midfield and even as a no.10 on occasion and saw Gray win caps for England’s U21 side. Going into the summer, Leeds were confident of keeping Gray at Elland Road.
Especially, after he signed a new deal in January. But it looks as if that has turned on it’s head after initial claims on Saturday evening that he was heading to Brentford in a deal believed to be worth £40m.
Tottenham take advantage as Brentford’s Gray bid rejected
Gray travelled to West London ahead of a medical but on Sunday morning, Leeds surprisingly chose to reject the bid despite allowing him to go. Leeds need to sell to comply with Profit & Sustainability Rules.
Then, Tottenham came in and began talks. Ange Postecoglou was even reported as to be holding sit-down talks with the Leeds talent ahead of a move to North London, with Spurs in the Europa League.
Gray is now closing in on a move to Tottenham in a move that is expected to see him become the club’s third most-expensive sale ever behind Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha, and ahead of Rio Ferdinand.
Fabrizio Romano delivers new Archie Gray update this morning
Now, Fabrizio Romano has a new update after a few hours of silence. He says that Tottenham are progressing nicely with a move for Gray after positive talks with his camp, and Gray said to be keen.
Romano said: “Understand Tottenham are advancing on Archie Gray deal, negotiations progressing. Spurs are optimistic on personal terms after positive talks with player’s camp, player open to the move. Tottenham hope to reach total agreement and book medical soon.”
