'Not allowed to do that': Lando Norris frantic radio messages during Austrian GP battle with Max Verstappen

Lando Norris and Max Verstappen left no inch spared during their close battle for the lead of the Austrian Grand Prix.

The Red Bull driver led for most of the race before a slow pit stop with 20 laps to go and a tyre advantage for Norris eliminated any of the protective cushion Verstappen had built up.

Verstappen also made a mistake coming out of the pits which put Norris closer, enabling him to challenge for the lead with around 15 laps to go in the race.

Below is a transcript of the team radio exchanges between both drivers and their engineers during the closing stages of the race.

Max Verstappen fends off Lando Norris

The race erupted when Norris tried to pass Verstappen on the inside of Turn 3, a move he previously tried during the Sprint race to some effect.

Verstappen initially positioned his RB20 on the outside of the corner, but suddenly darted to the middle of the track which caused Norris to back out of the move.

Norris reacted to his engineer, Will Joseph, over team radio and appeared to make a plea to the stewards to investigate the block from Verstappen. Meanwhile, the Red Bull driver thought there was a problem with his car when speaking to his engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase.

Norris then pulls over another manoeuvre at Turn 3 on the inside but overshoots the corner, forcing him to take to the run-off. The McLaren driver gives the position back but believes Verstappen is moving too much in the braking zone causing him to lock up.

Max Verstappen and Lando Norris collide

The next move proved to be fatal for Norris’ win chances after he tried around the outside of Verstappen at the same corner. The Red Bull driver initially took to the middle of the track and then drifted to the outside, leading to the collision and causing a puncture to both cars.

Norris passed Verstappen’s damaged car at Turn 4, then the Dutchman repassed at Turn 8.

Norris entered the pits and the McLaren mechanics attempted to repair the damage, before abandoning their efforts due to the extent that was inflicted on their frantic in-lap.

Verstappen also pitted and was able to rejoin the race, but was later given a 10-second time penalty after the stewards deemed him wholly at fault for the crash between him and Norris.
