A fire service spokesman said there were no reported injuries and the cause is not yet known but is not believed to be suspicious.

The recycling centre’s director, Clinton Johnson, said: “It was fine, the fire brigade were here quickly and it was contained straight away - I was back in bed by 2.30am.

“It was all contained in one bay so it was quite easy to get to the root of the fire.”

When asked what he thought might have been the cause of the blaze, he added: “It could have been a battery, but it’s not clear at the moment.”

He also confirmed that the fire caused no damage to the property and that the centre is open today as normal.
