'Worst performance I have seen...': £175k-a-week Man City player told he struggled badly last night

One Manchester City player had his worst game ever for his country last night, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

England took on Slovakia in the last-16, and scraped past their opponents having been staring defeat in the face.

England had been 1-0 down right up until the 95th minute, when Jude Bellingham scored an equaliser. The game then went to extra-time, with Harry Kane scoring early on.

England held out for a 2-1 win and will now face Switzerland in the quarter-final. The Three Lions will have to improve dramatically to avoid going out, against an impressive side.

England were shambolic against Slovakia, and it was another tough night for City’s three representatives.

For Gabby Agbonlahor, Kyle Walker was the worst he’s ever seen him in an England shirt.

Agbonlahor was speaking on talkSPORT this morning about last night’s game against Slovakia.

England are through to the quarters, but many fans are feeling somewhat sheepish today. They know it wasn’t good enough against Slovakia, and that the players need to step it up.

England were concerning defensively last night, which hadn’t actually really been the case too often in the tournament up until last night.

But Walker was poor at right-back. He looked a weak link from the first whistle and endured a tough first 15 minutes. His positioning on the Slovakia goal was alarming.

Agbonlahor said this morning: “Saka is borderline being dropped for me as well on that right-hand side for Cole Palmer. Kyle Walker – very careful, because that’s the worst performance I have seen Kyle Walker have in an England shirt. Trippier poor yet again, always cutting inside.”

Walker’s form a concern for City

Walker has been poor at Euro 2024 so far, and this follows on from a string of concerning performances for City in 2023/24.

Undoubtedly, Walker is one of the all-time top right-backs we’ve seen in English football. But he was arguably one of City’s worst players last season.

£175,000-a-week star Walker is 34 now and it is appropriate for City to start putting a succession plan in place. There haven’t really been many transfer links to new right-backs, although there have been suggestions Jeremie Frimpong could be a target.

He has played mainly as a wing-back at Bayer Leverkusen under Xabi Alonso, though.

A new right-back this summer should certainly be considered, because there have been clear signs of decline.
