Cambridge United sign Shayne Lavery from Blackpool

Cambridge United have completed the signing of Shayne Lavery from Blackpool.

The 25-year-old striker becomes the U’s third signing of the summer following the arrivals of Kelland Watts and James Gibbons.

Lavery made 106 appearances in all competitions across three seasons for the Tangerines, scoring 18 goals in the process.

The Everton academy graduate enjoyed an impressive two-year spell at Northern Irish side Linfield from July 2019 to June 2021, which saw him net 45 times in 74 games, ahead of his move to Bloomfield Road.

His stellar 2020/21 campaign saw him become the first player to win both the Northern Ireland Football Writers' Association Player of the Year and Ulster Footballer of the Year awards.

The Northern Ireland international, who has earned 19 caps for his country, also had a short spell at Falkirk for the second half of the 2018/19 campaign.

“I am really happy”, Lavery said, speaking to the club’s website.

“There has been a lot of interest from Cambridge this summer so it’s fantastic to get everything sorted and get it over the line.

“I am excited to see what the season will bring. I have been really impressed by the manager so far, so I can’t wait to get working with him and meet the rest of the lads.”

U’s boss Garry Monk added: “Shayne is a player we targeted early on this summer so it’s brilliant to be able to welcome him to the club.

“As a striker he has clear attributes that will help to create and score goals, along with huge endeavour to work hard for the team. He is a fantastic character that will fit well into our club.”
