Report: £45m Premier League player Jamie Carragher loves thought he was going to join Liverpool this summer

A Premier League player Jamie Carragher called “one of the best” actually believed he would sign for Liverpool this summer.

The Reds rarely sign players from fellow Premier League clubs – given the size of the asking price usually demanded – only taking Diogo Jota and Alexis Mac Allister in recent years.

However, there was one player – who is among the Premier League‘s best performers – who thought he would be joining Arne Slot at Liverpool this summer…

Anthony Gordon thought he would join Liverpool

A story from the Telegraph now states that Newcastle No.10 Anthony Gordon believed he was about to join Liverpool this summer.

It is said that Newcastle and Liverpool engaged in talks regarding the England international as the Magpies aimed to satisfy the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

However, the Reds failed to submit a bid which matched Newcastle’s asking price, and negotiations then fizzled out.

Despite a breakdown in talks, the Telegraph add that Gordon was incredibly keen on the move to Anfield, and his head had been turned by Liverpool’s interest, given the fact they are his boyhood club.

At one stage in the recent conversations between Newcastle and Liverpool, the 23-year-old genuinely thought he was going to sign for the Reds.

Interestingly, the Telegraph add that Newcastle are now concerned about Gordon’s state of mind, as it is felt the transfer saga has destabilised his happiness on Tyneside.

The man born in Liverpool – who Newcastle signed from Everton for £45m in January 2023 – scored 11 goals and provided ten assists in 35 Premier League appearances last season.

Deal could still happen

The deadline to raise funds for PSR was June 30th – so Newcastle no longer have an urgent desire to sell players.

However – given the fact Gordon’s head has been well and truly turned by the situation involving Liverpool – we doubt this is the end of it, especially as he supports the Reds.

There are strong doubts over the future of Luis Diaz at Anfield – amid interest from PSG – a man who plays in the same position as Gordon, who Carragher called “one of the best” players in the entire Premier League last season.

Therefore, we would expect Liverpool to push hard to sign Gordon if the Colombia international leaves, but given the fact the Newcastle star can also play centrally, we feel Slot could still sign him even if Diaz stays.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as it could intensify once Gordon returns from Euro 2024 duty with England.
