Steidten issues his first ever West Ham transfer update and it's very exciting

Technical director Tim Steidten has issued his first ever West Ham United transfer update and it’s very exciting indeed.

When it became clear West Ham were going to be parting ways with David Moyes, Tim Steidten made it clear he was here for the long-term.

The German declared his euphoria at finally having full control at West Ham.

Previously Moyes had power of veto on all transfers as per his contract before Steidten was appointed.

Moyes did an absolutely wonderful job at West Ham over his two spells.

But – by his own admission – he failed in trying to change the style of football and make West Ham a more attractive side to watch while also getting results.

His caution in the transfer market also held the Hammers back at times. Although he also helped West Ham dodge a few bullets in that regard too.

Moyes’ biggest failure was perhaps his failure to build the young, exciting squad he promised to in the mould of Red Bull.

After all the West Ham talk Steidten sets record straight

Now Steidten is looking to implement something akin to that famous football recruitment philosophy at the London Stadium.

And it will be new head coach Julen Lopetegui’s job to ensure he can combine style with substance.

Key to all of that will be West Ham’s summer business.

With another six players needed, at the very least, Steidten and Lopetegui have it all to do.

The world and its wife have been linked with the Hammers of late.

Brazilian teenager Luis Guilherme and veteran goalkeeper Wes Foderingham have arrived thus far.

But who and what is next for the Hammers amid claims of a tight budget.

Steidten’s first ever West Ham transfer update is very exciting

Speaking to the press at the official unveiling of Lopetegui, Steidten has promised a big window for the Hammers.

The former Bayer Leverkusen man says West Ham will be busy making signings as the club works on bringing in targets.

And he reassured West Ham fans that – as Hammers News has consistently reported – the club is in rude health financially.

“Of course we are working to improve (the squad),” Steidten said on the club’s official website.

“The first thing to highlight is that we’re happy with the players, but of course we’re going to try to improve.

“We have to work very hard to be ready for the Premier League, and we would like players as soon as possible, but it’s not easy.

‘We’re looking at all areas’

“I can’t tell you specifics, but it will be a busy summer for us for sure.

“The owner and the board have done a really good job over recent years, so we’re in good shape financially…

“We’re trying to build up the squad. We’re not limiting ourselves to one position – we’re looking at all areas.”

When you work in football you are always under pressure to prove yourself.

No matter what your track record.

So now he is in full charge of West Ham’s recruitment, that is also the case for Steidten.

He got off to a great start last year with the captures of Mohammed Kudus and Edson Alvarez.

The jury is still out on Konstantinos Mavropanos – who looks like cult hero material one week and a mistake waiting to happen the next.

Guilherme is a big punt at 18 years of age coming straight from Brazilian football.

But the German’s early work at West Ham and his record in helping to build that all-conquering Leverkusen team certainly bodes well.
