Jaylen Harrell, a four-star small forward in the 2025 class, has committed to Providence and head coach Kim English, he announced live on the On3 Recruits YouTube Channel.
The 6-foot-6 rising senior out of CATS Academy (MA) ultimately chose the Friars over Rutgers and Xavier, but also received offers from Alabama, Kansas, Virginia Tech, and others.
According to the On3 Industry Rankings, Harrell is the No. 86 overall recruit in the 2025 cycle. He’s also the No. 20 small forward prospect. The On3 Industry Ranking is a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
Harrell on his commitment to Providence
Jaylen Harrell went in-depth on his decision to choose Providence with On3.
“I ultimately chose Providence because of the relationship I have with the coaching staff,” he said. “From the head coach, all the way to strength and conditioning coach. I know that they want the best for me. It’s different when the head coach is all in one you, calling you every day, and coaching you even when you’re not even committed. Assitant Coach Paulumbo is sending me clips during the EYBL season so I can get better and it really helps. So having that support all the time is the main reason. Another reason is that it’s close to home. I can come home whenever I want. I believe in the goal of winning at a high level there and I believe in Kim’s vision of what we’re going to do in the next coming years.”
His trust in Kim English played a role in his decision
“I trust Kim’s vision and what he wants me to be in the program,” Harrell said. “A person that can be a spark, just play their role in a great way, just do their job, and score the ball when I need to and play defense. And just him holding me accountable. I know he will. To play defense and on offense, pushing me and developing me as much as he can. Our relationship is very close compared to the other head coaches I’ve been recruited by. It doesn’t even really feel like a head coach, but more like a big brother just because of how young he is and how well I can connect with him. So that’s the main reason I trust him and what he’s doing at Providence. Also, if you’re getting fried by your head coach in one-on-one, I think it’s best that you listen to him. Just knowing that he can always work out with me, you know your head coach wants what is best for you, on and off the court. It’s another level of why you’d want to go to their school.”
Harrell breaks down his play style
“My play style is a two-way scorer. I score the ball a lot, that’s why I stand out. Being a leader, my vision on the court. Getting other people involved, making other people better on my team. A lot of people compare me to Paul Pierce on Jayson Tatum, when it comes to my playstyle. But at the end of the day, a lot of people say I have an old man’s game because of my ability to post up and take advantage of guys smaller than me, but also if a guy is bigger than me, I can blow by you and score the ball with ease. So just a great, scoring, two-way player.”
His message to the Friar faithful
“I’m just very thankful for all the Friar fans. Just all the support they gave me, throughout this recruiting process. Anytime I post on my page, whether it be Instagram or Twitter, I know I’m going to get 300 comments saying ‘Friar’ from the burners. So we see that and appreciate the love. My goal and the team’s goal is to bring a National Championship to Providence and we strongly believe we can do that. I don’t know who said you can’t recruit high at Providence or you can’t win at a high level, but I promise you we’re going to do that next year and it’s going to start very, very soon. So Friars, get ready.”
