Carson Hocevar spun Harrison Burton under caution during the Cup Series race at Nashville Superspeedway on Sunday, and two insiders have an interesting debate about it. OnThe Teardown podcast, Jeff Gluck and Jordan Bianchi of The Athletic discuss whether Hocevar should be penalized for the incident.

“In the moment immediately we’re like, oh yep. Okay well, that’s going to be a penalty,” Gluck said. Everybody saw it. It’s not like TV missed it. …But then that doesn’t get penalized, but then the Layne Riggs thing in the moment, which I thought was relatively innocuous, or just two guys going at it, that’s two laps?

“I know it’s different race directors, oh it’s officiated differently or whatever. And I know now that you say that NASCAR has said after the race they’re going to look into the Hocevar thing and it’s going to be one of those Tuesday things. How are you in race control Friday night and you immediately see the Layne Riggs things and go boom, two laps reckless driving. …You give two laps for that, but this seemed like pretty blatant to me, and nothing? You gotta wait till Tuesday?”

Did NASCAR not pay attention to Carson Hocevar and Harrison Burton?

Bianchi was “disappointed” in Gluck’s response largely because he wanted to see a rant from him. However, Bianchi said he didn’t “agree with the Hocevar thing” in terms of not being punished.

“It was almost like their attention was diverted if you will,” Bianchi said when talking about Hocevar hitting Burton. …It feels like their attention just kind of… This caution just happened, we’re focused on this, we’re doing all these other things and then it’s like oh shoot, what happened over here? But I feel like we’ve had that conversation where it does feel like they missed something we almost want somebody there whose sole purpose is to, ‘Hey, we’re focused on all of this because the caution mechanisms are in place. We’re trying to get everybody lined up and open pit road.'”

Bianchi added: “I feel like that’s what they missed it because we’ve been down this road before where they miss things.” When Gluck said NASCAR didn’t miss it, Bianchi replied, “They did miss it because they didn’t do anything in real-time. They did miss it and obviously, they missed it because they’ve gone back and have said we’re going to review that.

Hocevar is driving for Spire Motorsports and is in his first year as a full-time driver in the Cup Series. He hit Burton who drives for Wood Brothers Racing and is the son of former NASCAR star Jeff Burton.
