Jamie Carragher and Reece James react after Ross Barkley seals £5m Aston Villa transfer

It’s been a busy start to the week for Aston Villa, who announced the arrivals of three players on Monday, including Ross Barkley.

Now that Monchi and Unai Emery have weathered the storm of Aston Villa’s PSR concerns, the duo can focus on bolstering the squad.

The departures of Douglas Luiz, Tim Iroegbunam and Omari Kellyman enabled Villa to orchestrate sufficient sales to patch up their financial woes, with incomings now expected.

So far, five new faces have been announced, with Lewis Dobbin, Ian Maatsen, Enzo Barrenechea, Samuel Iling-Junior and Ross Barkley entering the fold.

Barkley is the latest signing to be unveiled at Bodymoor Heath, with the Englishman returning to Villa four years after his loan spell at the club.

Premier League figures react to Ross Barkley signing for Aston Villa

It’s been a story of revival for Barkley, who impressed at Luton Town last season on his return to the Premier League.

After joining Chelsea from Everton in 2018, the midfielder’s career began to decline as game time in West London was sparse, seeing him join Villa on loan during the 2020/21 season.

The 30-year-old joined Ligue 1 outfit OGC Nice before signing for Luton in 2023, where his career was revitalised, to the joy of many.

Taking to Instagram to announce his permanent transfer to Villa, the midfielder admitted that he is ‘excited’ to be back at Villa Park.

“Excited to be back at Aston Villa, an amazing club that achieved so much last season. Really looking forward to getting started and helping the team this season!”

As expected, the former England international was met with a flood of well-wishes, as Premier League stars past and present congratulated him on the move.

  • Reece James – Yes bro, so happy for you!!
  • Jamie Carragher – 🙌 🙌
  • Danny Drinkwater – Love it you
  • Teden Mengi – All the best bro

Barkley signing is a smart move from Monchi

Capturing one of the stand-out midfielders in the Premier League last season for a mere fee of £5m is outstanding business from Monchi and Villa.

The Villans required depth in midfield after their lack of options in that area was exposed last term, seeing Barkley’s arrival help to fill such void.

On top of that, Emery will add experience and quality to his squad, who are preparing to compete in the Champions League and continue their progression as a club.

After contributing to nine goals in the Premier League last term for Luton, Barkley caught the eyes of many for his rise back to the top in England, seeing Villa’s capture come at an exciting time.
