Wrexham chief Humphrey Ker shares hilarious response after George Evans signed new deal

Wrexham’s executive director Humphrey Ker has shared his reaction after George Evans sealed a new contract with the club.

Wrexham are currently assembling a squad ready to tackle the challenge of League One.

Goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo was first through the door on a free transfer, with the 22-year-old signing a three-year contract at the Racecourse Ground following a successful loan.

Phil Parkinson is currently scouring the market for more recruits, resulting in recent links to Ryan Longman from Hull City and Millwall striker Tom Bradshaw.

Wrexham being linked to Championship players is encouraging as it paints their ambition in perfect light and shows they mean business in the transfer market.

The Reds do need at least six new players to challenge for promotion next season, and whilst getting the correct personnel through the door is crucial, so is keeping hold of their current first-team stars.

Humphrey Ker reacts after George Evans signs new Wrexham contract

Wrexham showcased their appetite to tie down their current players by awarding George Evans a new two-year contract with the option of a further year.

The 29-year-old has been a revelation at the base of midfield since arriving from Millwall on transfer deadline day last summer.

A picture of defensive solidity in front of the back three and an excellent distributor of possession, Evans featured 27 times last term as Wrexham earned promotion to the third tier.

As a result, the Englishman was delighted at his tremendous displays being rewarded with a new contract and so was executive director Humphrey Ker, who responded to the news via Instagram.

Ker is known by many as a comedian outside of football, so it was therefore no surprise to see him pen a humourous response.

He wrote: “Seen a few people describing this contract renewal as a “no-brainer”. I think that’s unfair because @georgeevans22 is much cleverer than he looks.”

Wrexham have other contract issues to resolve

Evans signing a new deal at Wrexham should open the floodgates for other key first-teamers to commit their future to the club.

The Reds have 16 players whose contracts expire in 2025, and although the likes of Sam Dalby, Billy Waters and Anthony Forde will likely be released next summer, there are several who deserve to have their futures tied down.

That list includes Max Cleworth, Andy Cannon, Ryan Barnett and Tom O’Connor as their next priorities.

The above four players will all play key roles for Parkinson in League One and to avoid losing them for nothing in 2025, they must be given new contracts very soon.
