Report: How Manchester City currently feel about Bruno Guimaraes as £100m release clause expires

Bruno Guimaraes’ release clause may have expired, but it looks like the transfer saga involving the Newcastle United midfielder is set to continue.

There was a sigh of relief as June 24th passed without anyone paying £100million for Bruno Guimaraes. That meant that his release clause had expired without anyone activating it, handing the Magpies control over the 26-year-old’s future.

There were fears that Manchester City could swoop in and sign Bruno, especially with them ending their interest in Lucas Paqueta. That created a dangerous situation for Newcastle, but one that passed by with Man City deciding that the Brazil international was not worth £100million.

Now Newcastle have the power again, and are intending to keep Bruno at St James’ Park.

But while his release clause has expired, interest in Bruno remains.

Manchester City still interested in Bruno Guimaraes

That is according to the Athletic, who describe Bruno as Manchester City’s ‘big’ midfield target this summer.

They add that the situation involving Man City and Bruno could drag on, with Pep Guardiola’s side opting against activating his £100million release clause.

If they are planning to continue their interest, that would suggest that they think they can get him for less than £100million. However, it would come as a major surprise if Newcastle were to agree to a cheaper deal – or any deal at all for that matter.

Clubs that wanted to sign Bruno had their chance, and it has been and gone. The only concern is if Bruno pushes to move, and you have to imagine that the opportunity to play for Manchester City would be very appealing.

How Manchester City feel about Bruno

And it would appear that Man City think a lot of Bruno, given who they believe he is comparable to.

The Athletic add that Man City think Bruno could directly replace Rodri at the Etihad, if the Spaniard was either injured, suspended or in need of a rest.

That is extremely high praise, as Rodri is recognised as the best in the world in his position. He is an outstanding defensive midfielder, and someone who Man City struggle to function without.

But while City fancy signing Bruno to be their Rodri reserve, Newcastle need him to be their talisman. The Magpies do not want to sell their major stars, which is why they agreed let the likes of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson to depart to solve their PSR problem.

Newcastle will have no intention of letting Bruno leave on the cheap, and the hope will be that he is just as wiling to remain on Tyneside now that his release clause has expired.
