Portugal coach Roberto Martinez has urged Bayern Munich to launch a renewed bid to sign midfielder João Palhinha.

Bayern almost signed the Fulham player last August but the deal fell apart at the last minute, frustrating then coach Thomas Tuchel's wish for another holding number 6.

Tuchel has left Bayern and it remains to be seen if head of sport Max Eberl and new coach Vincent Kompany will come back in for Palhinha, after the trail went cold in January.

"I'm absolutely delighted with his performance, he had a big influence on our game," Martinez told reporters after a 0-0 draw and penalty shoot-out victory over Slovenia in the Euro last 16 on Monday.

"He's not just good enough for Bayern, he would even strengthen Bayern. He makes players around him better. He deserves everything that comes his way. He's even better as a person."

Portugal next play in France in the European Championship quarter-final in Hamburg on Friday, when Palhinha is again set to start as he bids to shine again for a prospective new employer.

The 28-year-old recently said: "Both clubs know where I want to be in a month's time."
