North Korea shifts TV broadcasts to Russian satellite after Putin's visit

Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin in Pyongyang, June 20 2024

Starting on June 29, North Korea's Korean Central Television began transmitting via the Russian satellite Express 103 instead of the Chinese satellite ChinaSat 12.

The satellite change follows Russian dictator Vladimir Putin's visit to North Korea in June, according to Reuters. South Korean government agencies and media monitor North Korean state media as a limited source of information, despite its highly politicized and choreographed content.

While it remains possible to watch North Korean TV online, the quality may be delayed or low, Reuters reported. It is currently unknown whether North Korea has temporarily switched its broadcasting to the Russian satellite or if this change will be permanent.

Putin arrived in Pyongyang on June 18 to meet with dictator Kim Jong Un, marking his first visit to the North Korean capital since 2000.

Putin and Kim Jong Un signed an agreement on a "comprehensive strategic partnership" to expand economic and military cooperation and strengthen a "united front" against Washington.

The agreement includes the following clauses:

  • Moscow and Pyongyang commit not to enter into agreements with third countries that may pose a "threat to the sovereignty and security" of the two countries.
  • The two countries seek to step up bilateral trade and create "favorable conditions" for economic cooperation.
  • Moscow and Pyongyang agreed to "develop cooperation" in space, peaceful nuclear energy, AI, and IT industries.
  • The countries will intensify cooperation in the field of propaganda to counter allegedly "unreliable information and informational provocations."
  • Russia and North Korea will create a "system of taking measures" to strengthen defense capabilities to "prevent war and ensure peace."

The agreement on the strategic partnership is indefinite.

The Pentagon stated that the increased cooperation between Russia and North Korea is a cause for concern.
