Charges in opposition journalist Sadykov murder case to be reclassified, Prosecutor Office says

Sadykov was critically wounded in a shooting on June 18 in Kyiv's Shevchenkivskyi district, and later died in the intensive care unit, law enforcement officers confirmed.

Initial investigations identified two Kazakh nationals as suspects in the crime.

Law enforcement plans to upgrade the charges from attempted murder to premeditated murder carried out by a group of individuals on a contractual basis (p.p. 11, 12 ch. 2 art. 115 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code).

Sadykov's wife, Natalia, reported his death on the night of July 2.

Assassination attempt on Aidos Sadykov in Kyiv

An assassination attempt was made on Kazakh opposition figure Aidos Sadykov in central Kyiv on June 18.

Known for his criticism of the Kazakh government, Sadykov fled to Ukraine with his family in 2014. He lived in Kyiv as a refugee while retaining his Kazakh citizenship.

After the attack, Sadykov underwent surgery and remains in critical condition.

His wife accuses Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of orchestrating the attack, suggesting a "professional killer" likely carried it out.

President Tokayev responded to the incident, stating that Kazakh authorities are willing to assist in the investigation.

Ukrainian police identified suspects in the attempted murder on June 21.

The suspects are two Kazakh nationals: Meiram Karatayev, born in 1991, and Altay Zhakanbayev, born in 1988.

The suspects reportedly fled to Moldova on the day of the attack and were subsequently placed on an international wanted list.

Altay Zhakambayev was detained in Kazakhstan after voluntarily presenting himself to local authorities for questioning on June 22.
