Kennet School celebrates annual Sports Personality of the Year Awards

Kennet School has celebrated its sporting achievements throughout the last academic year.

The Sports Personality of the Year Awards showcase exceptional individual and group talent in a diverse range of sports across different year groups.

Winner, Alby Holland, with Headteacher, Grace Rigg

The event featured 12 award categories, with the highlight being the award for Sports Personality of the Year.

Five nominees competed for this prestigious title, but it was 18-year-old powerlifter, Alby Holland, who took home the trophy following a whole-school pupil vote and an audience vote on the night.

He holds nine regional records and is ranked 4th in the UK, and 17th in the world.

Before powerlifting, Mr Holland played football and rugby.

He was a key player in the team which won the Berkshire Schools Under 14 Cup and the Berkshire County Cup in 2019 — and reached the Elite National Cup Semi-Finals in 2020.

A school spokesperson said: “As a school, we want to applaud the talent, leadership and dedication of all our pupils.

“The evening was a true celebration of our pupils' athletic prowess, dedication and sportsmanship.”

Head of girls' PE, Hannah Jones, added: “Seeing our pupils grow and excel in sports is the ultimate reward for our PE teachers.

“This year's achievements have been particularly inspiring, and we are incredibly proud of all our pupils."

Also joining on the night were two Kennet alumni, Holly Cowan and Scarlett Maleham, who shared their journeys to becoming accomplished athletes since leaving the school.

Year 7: P Legg and T Pike,
