Reports: Barcelona keen to swoop for Nico Williams

Barcelona are stepping up their efforts to sign Spain star Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao, widespread media reports in Spain said on Tuesday.

According to the newspaper Sport, the Catalans and new coach Hansi Flick are "absolutely crazy" about signing the 21-year-old winger.

However, Barça still have financial problems and Williams only signed a new deal with Bilbao until 2027 in December. The buy-out clause is said to be €60 million ($64 million).

"I only recently extended my contract at Athletic, I feel very comfortable there. I'm very happy," he recently told TV station TVE.

"It feels very strange that you're asking me about my future."

Williams' Spain wing partner Lamine Yamal, 16, had already made it known that he would also like to share the Barcelona dressing room with his friend.

Reports say Chelsea are interested in Williams, who has been one of the players of the tournament so far at Euro 2024, with Spain winning all four of their matches before a quarter-final with hosts Germany on Friday.
