Sunderland fans are all saying the same thing after club confirmed Callum Styles decision

Sunderland confirmed yesterday that Callum Styles has returned to Barnsley following his loan spell with the club.

The midfielder joined Sunderland on loan in the January transfer window with the option to buy him this summer.

After being sidelined for the first four matches of his time on Wearside, Styles was brought into play primarily as a left wing-back due to the club’s extensive injury list.

The Hungary international made 10 starts for the Black Cats, and while he improved towards the end of the season, he often came under heavy criticism for his performances.

Styles was slammed for causing ‘the biggest issue‘ on his debut defeat to Swansea City and really struggled to impress during the club’s terrible run of form.

It was unclear whether Sunderland would exercise the option to buy the 24-year-old, but he has now returned to Yorkshire.

Following his exit, Kristjaan Speakman said: “As we continue to plan for the new season, we have decided not to take the option in Callum’s loan agreement and therefore his time with us has concluded. Callum’s attitude and application was first class throughout his time at the Club and we wish him well for the future.”

Sunderland fans have now reacted to the news, and despite his gradual improvement, they have mostly shared their delight at the decision.

Sunderland’s options are limited in midfield following the exit of Corry Evans, but Styles’ return to Barnsley suggests they are looking to invest in some more experienced players.

If the Black Cats are to push on for a play-off place then they need a lot more quality than what they had last term.

Styles never managed to establish a spot in the middle of the park, and with Aji Alese and Dennis Cirkin set to return, he would have had no chance at playing in defence either.

It’s unclear how much he would have cost, but the club have definitely made the right decision in not signing him if it means bringing in more quality and experience instead.
