Darwin Nunez misses out on Uruguay record vs USA at Copa America

Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez has been in superb form for Uruguay, after another somewhat frustrating club campaign.

The forward did manage to find the back of the net 18 times for the Reds last season, but it is a tally that could have been much more.

Nunez’s lack of composure in the final third has been highlighted time and again, with his speed and movement bringing so many chances his way.

He can undoubtedly take his game to the next level next season, with Liverpool insiders believing the attacker has not yet reached his full potential at Anfield.

It is, however, the opposite scenario for Uruguay, with Nunez in scintillating form for his nation, who are currently flying high at Copa America.

Liverpool star Darwin Nunez misses out on Uruguay record

Uruguay have topped Group C with three wins from three, overcoming Panama, Bolivia and host nation USA.

And Nunez has been central to their success, scoring in the opening victories against Panama and Bolivia.

He did, however, miss out on the chance to clinch a Uruguay record by firing a blank in the 1-0 win against the USA.

As per the official Liverpool website, with his goal against Bolivia, Nunez equalled Hector Scarone’s record of scoring in seven consecutive matches for Uruguay almost 100 years ago.

The Liverpool forward’s scoring run began in October, with 10 goals scored in total from his seven matches before the USA clash.

But the 96-year record was not toppled by the Anfield ace, who will now turn his focus to Uruguay’s quarter-final clash.

Nunez may be disappointed to have missed out on the record, but he doesn’t have much time to ponder what could have been.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side are looking very strong in the USA, but usual customers Argentina and Brazil will be hard to beat as always.

Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister and Alisson are currently representing the former and the latter respectively, with Luis Diaz in action for Colombia.

Keeping a close eye on matters is former Anfield manager Jurgen Klopp, who has revealed he has been texting Alisson during the tournament.

A fine competition for Nunez should give him some much-needed confidence ahead of his return to Anfield later this summer, with the forward set to be a key player under Arne Slot.
