Arsenal star told he's now favourite to win Euro 2024 Golden Boot ahead of Bellingham and Mbappe

BBC Sport pundit Pat Nevin has now tipped an Arsenal star to win the Euro 2024 Golden Boot award ahead of the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham.

This summer’s Euros has been an unusual competition in regards to goals, with three players currently leading the top scorer charts with three goals apiece, with Jamal Musiala the only one still in the tournament.

With own goals prominent, there’s a real chance that the winner of the Golden Boot could take home the award with just four goals, the lowest tally at a European championship since Fernando Torres claimed it in 2008 with three.

And Chelsea legend Nevin has now predicted an Arsenal player to win the award.

Nevin backs Arsenal’s Kai Havertz to win the Golden Boot award

Writing on the BBC Football Extra newsletter, Nevin backed Arsenal and Germany star Kai Havertz to win the Golden Boot, with the 25-year-old attacking midfielder already on two goals at this summer’s Euros.

The former Chelsea man ended the club season with the Gunners with an impressive 14 goals in all competitions, and Nevin now believes Havertz could be in with a shot of winning the Golden Boot award at the Euros with Germany.

Nevin wrote on Germany’s win against Denmark: “As ever, Antonio Rudiger was imperious and ‘my man’ Kai Havertz is growing into the player I always thought and indeed promised he would become. ‌ Without being tournament favourites yet, no one will be shocked if they are holding the trophy on 14 July.

“My extremely long shot that Havertz could be top scorer and the most likely player to score the winning goal in the competition is still hanging on by more than a thread. ‌Judging by the way things are going for Jude Bellingham, he may well be the second most likely to be the man with the golden boot. The possibility of a final between the two old adversaries with their young stars is still a tantalising possibility.”

Havertz will believe he can win historic European accolade this summer

With no Arsenal player yet to win the Golden Boot award at the Euros, Havertz becoming the first to do so would be oddly poetic for the Germany forward given how the 25-year-old’s career in north London started.

It’s easy to forget that 12 months ago Havertz was regarded as the worst signing of the 2023 summer transfer window, with Arsenal slammed for spending as much as £65m for the Chelsea star given his woes in the Premier League.

However, Havertz has established himself as a genuine star for Arsenal, and the versatile forward winning the Golden Boot at the Euros would be the dream way for the north London talisman to end his season.
