Denny Hamlin had some choice words for Carson Hocevar after the No. 77 wheelman hooked Harrison Burton under caution during last weekend’s race in Nashville.

During the latest episode of his Actions Detrimental podcast, Hamlin called on NASCAR to hit Hocevar in his pockets with a penalty, explaining why he’s not a fan of the stunt Hocevar pulled on Sunday evening.

“I’m going to call on NASCAR here. They need to do something to Carson,” Hamlin said, regarding Hocevar’s potential punishment. “They don’t need to suspend him or anything like that, but they need to dig into his pocket a little bit, because I think that you have to — anytime that you have somebody that goes before a judge, they always take into account your past history, and we’ve seen this happen when he was in the Truck Series, and I think he right-rear hooked someone under caution at Martinsville. … Carson goes through these moments where he’ll be fine, or at least what I see, he’ll be fine, and then all of a sudden, he’ll just lose it. Certainly, Harrison took exception to it, as he should. The No. 77 crashed him under caution. So, you need to dig into his pocket. Points is whatever.

“I don’t know if he really cares about points. I guess he’s racing for Rookie of the Year, so maybe some points or something, because they did do that to Austin Hill, for crashing somebody in the Xfinity Series under caution at Charlotte. … You’ve got to do something, and I don’t even know that Austin Hill has the rap-sheet that Carson Hocevar does. So it’s just my opinion that, you’ve got a young guy coming in here, and he’s doing these same bad habits, that he’s been doing, and again, he goes through phases with it, but yeah, I think they need to get his attention here.”

Moreover, Hamlin elaborated on why the situation had him so annoyed, but in the end he thinks this could be a learning moment for Hocevar as he continues to wet his feet in the Cup Series.

“It’s just not right to right-rear hook someone under caution,” Hamlin added. “And again, it’s not like he destroyed his car, but the severity of the crash doesn’t matter. It’s still the same act. … It’s just not good, for sure. … I think that beside someone, and then steering to try and hook them, I’m not a fan of that, at all, and I think that this typically, in NASCAR’s past, when you had different people running it, they would give these learning moments. ‘Okay, don’t be doing this,’ and we’ll see if they do that.”

Alas, the ball is in NASCAR’s court, but Denny Hamlin has made his opinion known, believing Carson Hocevar should face some punishment for his actions in Nashville.
