Turkey's Merih Demiral scored the fastest goal in a European championship knock-out match when he netted after 57 seconds in Tuesday's last 16 match against Austria.

The ruling body UEFA said that Demiral's strike beat the previous mark of 1 minute 40 seconds it took Poland's Robert Lewandowski to score in the 2016 quarter-finals against Portugal.

The tournament in Germany had earlier also seen the earliest goal overall at the finals when Albania's Nedim Bajrami netted after 23 seconds against Italy in the group stage.
