Packers insider: Jordan Love ‘could be next big quarterback domino to fall’

Jordan Love owns one year of experience as the Packers starting quarterback. He got Green Bay into the playoffs the final weekend of the regular season. Then he helped engineer a big road victory over the Cowboys.

To think, the Packers may make Love the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history within the next three weeks.

Why? It’s all about timing. That’s according to Matt Schneidman, who covers the Packers for The Athletic. Schneidman explained his reasoning:

This could be the next big quarterback domino to fall after Trevor Lawrence recently tied Joe Burrow for the highest average annual salary in the sport. Love could become the highest-paid player in NFL history by that metric, if only because of where the market is and what the Packers and his representation project him to become over the next few years.

(And) “Love is entering a contract year, and general manager Brian Gutekunst told local radio station The Game that he wants to get a deal done before training camp opens July 22. Love also said that based on what he’s heard, he’s optimistic a deal could get done before then, too. This isn’t a matter of if a deal gets done but of when and for how much.

Packers could reset QB market, but there still are others who could surpass Jordan Love this summer

As always, the NFL quarterback market is acid hot. The receivers are making in roads this off season with their multi-zero contracts. But the NFL is all about the QBs. This time a year ago, Joe Burrow bettered Justin Herbert, Jalen Hurts and Lamar Jackson when he signed a contract worth $55 million a year.

Then earlier this summer, Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars matched the $55 million a year, although Lawrence won’t get his money until after 2025. Meanwhile, the Lions awarded Jared Goff a contract worth $53 million a year that places him behind Burrow and Lawrence, but ahead of the quarterbacks who signed last year.

Here’s the rest of the top 10: Kyler Murray ($46.1 million); Deshaun Watson ($46 million); Patrick Mahomes ($45 million) and Kirk Cousins ($45 million).

It’s not about who can claim top quarterback in the NFL. It’s about the timing of the deal. Mahomes, who has won three Super Bowl titles, is clinging to the top 10. He’s on record saying he’d prefer the Chiefs pay other players on the team. And the market could reset again with potential deals for Tua Tagovailoa and Dak Prescott.

If predictions are accurate, then the Packers will be paying Love more than Aaron Rodgers, the guy he replaced. Rodgers, who now is with the Jets, makes $37.5 million per year after the team restructured his contract. He’s now tied for 12th.

Love told reporters last month that his agent keeps him in the loop as sides negotiate. He attended all OTAs, so he’s not trying to force anything. Plus, he generated some nice stats last season. He completed 64.2% percent of his passes for 4,159 yards and 32 touchdowns against 11 interceptions. The Packers were the youngest team in the NFL last season, yet including the post season, they won 10 games.
