A Birmingham man has been sentenced to over five years in federal prison for possessing a stolen U.S. Postal Service (USPS) key and stolen mail, announced U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona and U.S. Postal Inspection Service Inspector-in-Charge Scott D. Fix, Houston Division.
Derrell Allen Matthews, 27, was sentenced to 63 months in prison by U.S. District Court Judge Anna Manasco.
According to court documents and evidence presented at trial, Matthews used the stolen key to access multiple USPS mail collection boxes in Hoover, Alabama, between August 2022 and April 2023.

He stole a significant amount of mail, including over 350 fraudulent checks totaling more than $1 million.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service conducted the investigation, which was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Natalie Paine McKenna.
This case also involved two other individuals. Keaundria Janae Gresham, 30, of Pleasant Grove, was sentenced to 12 months in prison for conspiracy, public official accepting a bribe, and possession of stolen mail keys.

Steven Cornelius Hudson, Jr., 34, of Bessemer, was sentenced to 36 months of probation for possession of stolen mail.
