Merih Demiral made European Championship history as part of his brace and goalkeeper Mert Günok produced the save of the tournament to help Turkey stun fancied Austria 2-1 on Tuesday and reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 2008.

Man of the Match Demiral opened the scoring after 57 seconds for the fastest goal in a Euros knock-out match, and nodded the second in the 59th, both off corner kicks from young star Arda Güler.

Substitute Michael Gregoritsch pulled one back in the 65th but then failed to level despite sustained pressure and 20-4 shots as their strong run came to a sudden end, with Günok making a sensational last-gasp save against Christoph Baumgartner's header.

Austria had impressed in the group stage with victories over Poland and the Netherlands, and had thrashed Turkey 6-1 in a March friendly, but all that was to no avail on a rainy night in Leipzig - where coach Ralf Rangnick and several of his players have a history at local club RB Leipzig.

Boosted by their large fan base, Turkey fought with all they had as they held on for a famous victory and advanced into a quarter-final against the Netherlands on Saturday in Berlin.

There they will be without Ismail Yüksek and Orkun Kökcü due to suspensions, after playmaker Hakan Calhanoglu and Samet Akaydin had missed Tuesday's match for the same reason.

The Dutch are also in the last eight for the first time since 2008 after beating Romania 3-0 earlier Tuesday.

The other quarter-finals are hosts Germany v Spain, France v Portugal (both Friday), and England v Switzerland (Saturday).

Turkish delight and Austrian heartbreak

Turkey defender Kaan Ayhann told Magenta TV: "It was a tough game. Austria were the toughest opponent. We didn't play our best football but we left our heart on the pitch and got a dirty victory."

Günok said: "We are super happy. It was a wonderful victory and I want to thank all our fans. We believe we can go a long way. We have huge motivation."

Gregoritsch admitted that Günok's save was "one of the best saves I have ever seen" and said that some of his team-mates cried after the defeat.

"We are very disappointed and sad. We didn't deserve to go out. But credit to Turkey how they defended and scored twice from set pieces. We tried everything. Football can be cruel," he said.

Rangnick said: "We suffered a very, very unfortunate defeat. We had as many scoring opportunities as in the March friendly and completely dominated the second half.

"It feels grotesque that we have to go home now."

Turkey draw first blood

The match started with bang when centre back Demiral smashed into the roof of the net inside the opening minute.

Güler's corner was cleared by Baumgartner on the goal line, the ball bounced back towards goal off team-mate Stefan Posch, goalkeeper Patrick Pentz just kept it out but the rebound fell to Demiral to score.

Baumgartner almost levelled in the third minute when his drive fell inches left, and shortly after he just missed a corner kick at the far right post as Austria pressed for an instant equalizer.

The game slowly settled down but each side had one more chance before intermission, with Demiral heading narrowly over in the 25th and Baumgartner aiming wide in stoppage time.

Austria press after the break but Turkey score

Austria went in search of the equalizer right from the restart, with Gregoritsch coming on for more attacking power and soon heading wide.

Marko Arnautovic should have levelled in the 51st when played through by Posch but Günok was there to deny him. The forward then shot inches left but the offside flag went up.

The missed opportunities backfired in the 59th when Demiral struck again for 2-0, rising between two defenders to head in another Güler corner kick.

Austria hit back but Turkey hang on

The goal sent the Turkey camp and their fans into a frenzy but Austria silenced them just six minutes later. Posch headed a Marcel Sabitzer corner on towards the far post where the unmarked Gregoritsch slotted home.

Austria now completely dominated and tempers were high, with Sabitzer hit by an object thrown from the crowd, reportedly a coin, when attempting a corner kick.

Baris Alper Yilmaz should have wrapped it up in the 89th on the counter but in the and it took Günok's big save against Baumgartner's header in the last miute of stoppage time to set off the celebrations.
