In a remarkable display of Florida's appeal as a pro-law enforcement state, Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody welcomed a group of nine new police officers to the Sarasota Police Department (SPD).
Over half of these recruits hailed from out-of-state, underscoring the state's growing reputation as a premier destination for law enforcement professionals.
The new officers, who moved to the Sunshine State from Georgia, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, New Mexico, and New York, represent a broader trend of law enforcement migration to Florida.

“Florida is the most pro-law enforcement state in the nation because we back our blue. We’ve been spreading the word about all the great incentives to join our ranks, and individuals like the new Sarasota recruits have answered the call—leaving behind places where their service was not as appreciated as it is here. Hearing their stories, why they made the bold decision to move to our state, I am as inspired as ever to continue doing all we can to show our support to those who bravely protect and serve," said Moody.
“This is a law-and-order state. Officers want to be able to do their job. There is no better feeling than when you know that you can go out there and be supported in enforcing the law. I’ve talked with officers all around the country and when state attorneys are not assisting them, it makes those officers not want to do their jobs. Thanks to the work of Attorney General Moody and Gov. DeSantis, officers know that when you come to the state of Florida, you are going to be able to do, and be supported in, doing your job," said Sarasota Police Chief Rex Troche.
The influx of out-of-state law enforcement officers to Florida is not a coincidence. The state has implemented a range of initiatives and incentives to attract and retain top-tier talent in the law enforcement field.

Since July 2022, nearly 5,000 recruits have joined Florida's law enforcement ranks, including over 1,200 individuals who have moved from other states. Notably, 400 of these officers hailed from California, Illinois, and New York, underscoring the appeal of Florida's pro-law enforcement policies.
One such initiative is the Governor's bonus program, which provides financial incentives for qualified law enforcement officers to join Florida's ranks. Eight of the nine new SPD officers sworn in during the ceremony were eligible for this bonus, further demonstrating the state's commitment to supporting and rewarding those who choose to serve and protect Floridians.
Attorney General Moody's efforts to attract law enforcement talent to Florida extend beyond the Thin Line Tribute. In 2021, she launched the "Be a Florida Hero" program, which provides an interactive map highlighting available career opportunities throughout the state.
