Matt LaFleur downplays need for a clear No. 1 wide receiver

Early in the Matt LaFleur days in Green Bay, the offensive one-two punch was an obvious one. Aaron Rodgers and Devante Adams were one of the best tandems in the NFL, tearing the league apart. Both are now in different spots, though, and Jordan Love does not have a true No. 1 wide receiver.

When asked if having a true go-to guy was a problem, LaFleur pushed back on the idea. He was comfortable with how the receivers performed last season, with everyone having their moment at times. LaFluer’s actions are backed up by his words too as Green Bay did not add a receiver this offseason.

“I personally do not think it matters,” LaFleur said. “If you look at the course of a season ago — every season is going to be a little different. But all those guys had their moments where they were the leading receiver in a game.”

Jayden Reed wound up being Green Bay’s leading receiver, going for 793 yards and eight touchdowns on 64 receptions. Romeo Doubs and Dontayvion Wicks were the only two other guys to break the 500-yard mark. That does not include Christian Watson either, who only played in nine games but caught 28 balls for 422 yards.

But if you include tight ends and running backs, seven different Packers had at least 40 targets on the season. LaFleur enjoys the skill positions available on the roster and if there is any problem in front of him, it’s making sure everybody eats.

“I feel really good about the collective unit,” LaFleur said. “The hardest part is you feel so good about them, it’s hard to get everybody the amount of touches you’d like to get. But that’s a good problem to have.”

In the two Adams-less seasons in Green Bay, nobody has been able to break 1,000 yards. While there is potential for somebody to reach the milestone, LaFleur is likely more interested in getting the job done offensively. Love began to break out at the end of the 2023 season and got the Packers an unexpected playoff win against the Dallas Cowboys.

Multiple connections work for him in the passing game. Maybe Watson can emerge as he’s back to 100% health. Sure, having somebody like Adams helps out a ton — we saw the success over the years. Even so, LeFleur enjoys the options in front of him for now and feeding them all.
