'He was outstanding': Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer wowed by Liverpool player's 'brilliant' Euro 2024 display

As one of the biggest clubs in Europe, Liverpool had a multitude of players representing their countries at Euro 2024.

A total of 10 players on the Reds’ books headed to Germany for the tournament, and seven are still in the competition following the last 16.

England’s Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez will look ahead to a quarter-final tie with Switzerland, who defeated Italy last time out.

Meanwhile, Diogo Jota’s Portugal will face Ibrahima Konate’s France for a spot in the semi-finals of Euro 2024.

The remaining three Liverpool players still at the tournament all represent the Netherlands, and they will be taking on Turkey in the last eight.

Liverpool star Cody Gakpo shines in Netherlands rout of Romania

Virgil van Dijk captained the Oranje in the 3-0 win over Romania, a game in which Cody Gakpo registered a goal and an assist.

The Liverpool attacker was a constant thorn in Romania’s side and opened the scoring in the first half, cutting in from the left and firing into the bottom corner.

Gakpo then came close to adding a second, forcing an excellent save after a driving run.

The Reds ace was unlucky to see a goal ruled out by VAR, but secured another goal contribution by assisting Donyell Malen’s second of the night.

BBC Sport pundits Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer loved what they saw from Gakpo and sung his praises mid-game and post-match.

“It was a really good goal by Cody Gakpo,” Shearer said on BBC One after the Liverpool man’s opener.

“The way he moves the ball quickly leaves the defender with little chance to adjust his feet.

“The goalkeeper should do better, but the move and the shot early is what beats the goalkeeper. It’s a really good strike.”

Later on, Lineker said live on BBC One (2/7/24, 7:02pm): “Brilliant performance from him. I thought he was the stand-out player. Got Man of the Match.”

Shearer replied: “He was a threat, the whole game, whether it was him on that left-hand side coming back inside. He also got the assist as well. Yeah, he was outstanding.”

Gakpo heroics will please Slot

Gakpo has been in and out of the Liverpool starting XI since his move to Anfield, but things could well change next season.

His heroics for the Netherlands at Euro 2024 will no doubt be pleasing to Slot, both as a fellow Dutchman and as his new manager.

In addition, speculation between Liverpool and Anthony Gordon didn’t lead to a move ahead of 30 June, and Newcastle no longer have a pressing need to sell him.
