Report: Premier League issues strict warning after Newcastle narrowly avoid PSR trouble

Following Newcastle United’s frantic scramble at the end of June to avoid a breach of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), the Premier League wrote to all 20 clubs.

There has been a lot of talk regarding PSR with clubs becoming more cautious in the transfer market. A ‘soft’ deadline of June 30th was given to clubs to ensure they adhered to the Premier League’s financial rules, this led to several of clubs desperately trying to offload players, including Newcastle.

Newcastle sold Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to help avoid a potential points deduction next season.

The Atheltic reported that Newcastle’s ‘black hole’ was anywhere between £30m and £100m, this left the Magpies scrambling towards the end of June, with star players such as Anthony Gordon, Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes being discussed as potential outgoings.

Luckily for Newcastle, they managed to stave off any potential punishments from the Premier League in the final few hours of June.

Premier League writes to all clubs following a chaotic June

As reported in The Athletic, the Premier League wrote to all its clubs following the conclusion of Newcastle’s PSR transfer business.

In the letter, the Premier League issued a strict warning to clubs that they have the power to request information about how the transfer was conducted, including the fee negotiated and how the clubs reached the final figure.

The Premier League also reminded clubs that they can return a transfer fee if they believe it to be unfairly inflated. Newcastle were not the only team to be involved in stressful transfer dealings last month, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Everton and Nottingham Forest were also at the heart of the situation.

Aston Villa and Everton both traded young players in Tim Iroegbunam and Lewis Dobbin, while Chelsea paid a vast fee for Omari Kellyman.

In a similar manner, Anderson’s move to Nottingham Forest saw Odysseas Vlachodimos come to St. James’ Park, which eased the financial burden on both clubs.

Each transfer conducted by Premier League clubs last month will be subjected to the standard assessments of fair market value. However, this is a difficult term to determine with several players involved in inflated transfer fees in recent years, which makes it hard for the Premier League to argue with clubs about a player’s valuation.

Newcastle can put their hectic June behind them and focus on the more positive side of the transfer window – attracting new players to Tyneside. Eddie Howe’s side have already brought Lloyd Kelly, John Ruddy and Vlachodimos to the club, as well as confirming the permanent signing of Lewis Hall following his successful loan spell with the club last season.

The club can now focus on improving specific areas of the first-team including right-wing, striker and centre-back. The Magpies have been linked with a host of players so far this summer including Bayern Munich-bound, Michael Olise.

Newcastle have a pool of targets to work through, and having saved a significant amount of money reshaping their goalkeeper ranks, the club can now invest more in other areas of the pitch.

With further departures expected, Eddie Howe’s side could look very different ahead of their first game of the new season against Southampton.
