Celtic's Liam Scales in focus as domestic counterpart takes inspiration from his exploits

Liam Scales performed an admirable career turnaround at Celtic last year, culminating in him landing a first-choice centre-back slot under Brendan Rodgers.

Previously, the Republic of Ireland international looked as though he could be headed to Aberdeen on a permanent deal last summer; however, due to a spate of injuries in his position, Scales took his chance and never looked back.

Rodgers rewarded him with a four-year contract at the tail-end of the 2023/24 campaign, in which he made 45 appearances and helped Celtic to claim a domestic double [Transfermarkt].

Over the break, he impressed for the Irish national side against Hungary; meanwhile, the former Shamrock Rovers man got the opportunity to compete against the might of Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal under John O’Shea.

Now set for another exciting season, Scales’ exploits haven’t gone unnoticed by some of his Scottish Premiership peers.

In his Pittodrie unveiling, new Aberdeen star Gavin Molloy cited Scales as an example of why moving to the Scottish Premiership can further his own career ambitions.

“Look at Liam Scales. He came over to Scotland and got his opportunity in the national team. I feel I can get there. I have confidence and trust in myself. That is the place I want to go to get into the Ireland team.

“It is great to have another Irishman here in Jamie McGrath. He came back late from his extended holiday. It is good to have Jamie here. He is a great lad and a great player.

“I have never played for Ireland at any level. I have never come close. That drives me. I just kept going about my business. Other people got called up, but I never did. I just kept at it. I know where I want to go and I know I am capable. I have no bad blood; I am just continuing to work hard.”

Liam Scales will be keen to thrive at Celtic in 2024/25

Scales may have encountered his opportunity by chance at Celtic; regardless, he is a shining example of where persistence can get you in football.

Rodgers clearly trusts him to thrive despite the pressure associated with Parkhead life, and that can be the perfect fuel for others to try and emulate his rise to prominence by impressive wherever they are in the Scottish football pyramid.

Undoubtedly, there may be movement at Celtic concerning the centre-back position this summer. That is normal, but Scales offers continuity and familiarity in that scenario after picking up valuable experience last campaign.

With all eyes on preparations for the new season, expect Scales to play a considerable part in the Hoops’ quest for further domestic silverware.
