Modern pentathlete Annika Zillekens has been named into Germany's team for the Paris Olympics, three years after her much-publicised fiasco with an assigned horse at the Tokyo Games.

Competing under her maiden name Schleu at the time, she dropped from first to last after the show-jumping part of the competition which she could't complete because her horse refused to jump over several obstacles.

Zillekens was criticised for excessive use of the whip and German coach Kim Raisner kicked out of the Games for punching the horse.

But there was also criticism on the sport for assigning horses to riders by lot, and modern pentathlon is set to drop horse riding after the Paris Games and replace it with an obstacle course event.

Zillekens was among 215 athletes from 23 sports nominated on Wednesday by the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) for the July 26-August 11 Games.

Others include the 18-strong women's football team headed by captain Alexandra Popp, the last remaining player from the 2016 team that won gold at the Rio de Janeiro Games.

Parallel bars world champion Lukas Dauser leads the gymnastics contingent despite suffering an arm injury recently.

Another medal hope is rhythmic gymnast Darja Varfolomeev, and so are track cyclists Lea Sophie Friedrich and Emma Hinze.

A fifth and final DOSB nomination is set for Friday. Germany will be sending more than 400 athletes to Paris.
