Report: Liam Cooper has now made his decision on whether he will sign a new contract at Leeds United

Liam Cooper remains one of three players with unsigned contracts on the table at Leeds United.

The Whites released their retained list almost a month ago now which confirmed that talks were ongoing over new deals with Cooper, Jamie Shackleton and Cody Drameh.

Sam Byram was the only first-team player coming to the end of his contract to have agreed a new deal, with a clause in his deal automatically triggered due to the number of appearances he made last season.

However, with Leeds now into their second day back for pre-season, Cooper, Shackleton and Drameh are still officially yet to make their decisions.

At this stage, it appears both Shackleton and Drameh are likely to leave, with the former close to an agreement with another club, and the latter never having been expected to accept it anyway.

Cooper makes decision on Leeds contract offer

There had been a delay in Cooper making his decision as he was in the Scotland squad out in Germany for Euro 2024.

But with Scotland having been out of the tournament for a week now, it has given him enough time to make up his mind on whether he would be committing to Leeds for an 11th season.

Throughout the last few months, all the signs have been pointing towards this year being his last at Elland Road, and according to TeamTalk, that is the case.

It is said that while the offer remains on the table, Cooper is not expected to sign it due to a disagreement over the length of the contract being offered.

Leeds are prepared only to offer him a one-year extension, but the 32-year-old is holding out for two in order to protect his long-term future.

The impasse is now ‘unlikely’ to lead to an agreement being struck between the two parties, and he will now be free to sign for another club, with options on the table.

Who has shown Cooper interest recently?

Cooper actually had the opportunity to join Saudi Arabian side Al-Qadsiah last summer but opted to turn it down in favour of staying at Leeds.

It will be interesting to see whether that option remains on the table following their promotion to the Saudi Pro League last season.

After a lack of game time under Daniel Farke, Blackburn Rovers were mentioned as a potential destination in January, but again, he knocked it back.

Stoke City were another side to have been linked during the winter.
