‘Need to still consider’: Karun Chandhok tells Lando Norris what he must think about when racing Verstappen

Max Verstappen driving has been the subject of more scrutiny following his clash with Lando Norris at the Austrian Grand Prix.

The Red Bull driver was accused of moving under braking by Norris as they diced for the lead of the race, which is what ultimately led to the collision with 15 laps to run.

Both cars sustained damage in the crash, while Norris came off worse and was forced to retire due to inflicting too much damage on his way back to the pits.

Given McLaren’s recent form, it is likely the pair will battle again on track, and former F1 driver Karun Chandhok has pointed out one thing for Norris to consider when he is wheel-to-wheel again on X.

Karun Chandhok gives Lando Norris advice

The stewards penalised Verstappen with a 10-second time penalty after deeming him wholly at fault for the contact, but Chandhok believes Norris could have done more to avoid the collision in the build up to the overtake.

“Just looking back at the Austrian GP to prep for Silverstone. Clearly Max deviated his line under braking on the lap they touched and was predominantly at fault. The stewards were right to penalise him.

“But as @brabsracer [David Brabham] taught me, whenever there’s an incident that isn’t your fault, you need to still consider if you could have done something to avoid it.

“The left kink into T3 and overtaking opportunity on exit means we’ve seen this move before. Lando will have to think about using those extra few inches when racing against Max in the future…”

Red Bull could have avoided the crash

Several have pointed out that Red Bull could have avoided the crash had Verstappen been told about Norris’ time penalty, which was picked up due to multiple track limits violations.

Radio transcripts of both Verstappen and Norris reveal that neither driver was informed of the track limits violation, which could have resulted in the three-time world champion being less stern in his defence.

Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko felt it was necessary to inform Verstappen, while Damon Hill believes it was “pretty clear” who was at fault in the accident.

Legendary F1 figurehead Ross Brawn also noted that Norris will need to rethink how he approaches racing Verstappen, as it is unlikely he will change his attitude to other competitors.
