Sheffield Wednesday target sends message to Di'Shon Bernard ahead of 'expected' free transfer

Di’Shon Bernard competed in his first Copa America tournament with Jamaica this summer.

The Sheffield Wednesday defender was first called up to the Jamaica squad just before moving to Hillsborough.

He has since racked up 17 caps and was most recently included in their Copa America squad.

Bernard started the Reggae Boyz’ opening two group fixtures, losing both to Mexico and Ecuador.

He was an unused substitute in their final match against Venezuela, before Jamaica exited the competition after finishing bottom of Group B.

Charlie McNeill sends message to Di’Shon Bernard

The 23-year-old took to Instagram to share a message following his time in the United States, writing: “My first Copa America came with many learning lessons, however it also showcased to the world how far we have come as a nation and how we can compete against the higher ranked teams.

“It’s now down to the small margins which we will tighten up and we will be back stronger. For the land we love.”

Bernard received messages of support from a number of players, though one that was most noticeable was from Charlie McNeill.

The striker sent Bernard a heart and two clapping hand emojis, before Wednesday fans replied telling him to join the Owls.

McNeill is a free agent after he was released by Manchester United this week, having netted four goals in 16 matches last season.

The 20-year-old is now ‘expected’ to join Wednesday on a free transfer this summer, linking up with his former Red Devils academy teammate, Bernard.

McNeill began his career at United, before joining Manchester City and then returning to Old Trafford in 2020.

The forward has 53 goals in 119 appearances across senior and youth football, but only managed three goals in 23 matches whilst on loan in League One and League Two.

Is it a good signing for Sheffield Wednesday?

McNeill has previously been heavily praised during his time in United’s academy and will be looking to finally kickstart his career in Yorkshire.

Given Wednesday’s expanding attack, it would be a surprise to see him given an immediate slot in the senior squad though.

The youngster will still have the likes of Jamal Lowe and Bailey Cadamarteri to push past, while the Owls are still expected to snap up more strikers in the coming months.

McNeill and Bernard’s friendship will hopefully help him settle in though, as he will surely be inspired by the centre-back’s rapid rise since joining the club.
