Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan offered Vladimir Putin help in ending the full-scale war in Ukraine, but was refused, Reuters reports.
During the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Kazakhstan, Erdogan stated that he believes in the possibility of achieving a just peace that would satisfy both sides.
As later noted by Putin's spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, the President of Turkey cannot play the role of a mediator. However, he did not explain why the Kremlin opposes this.
Turkey's position on the war
Turkey condemned Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine but has taken a neutral position and periodically attempts to offer its platform for peace negotiations.
It is also worth noting that, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukraine plans to develop a clear peace plan to end the war by the end of the year. He also recently outlined the only possible format for negotiations with Putin.
