Report: How much Newcastle United wanted Liverpool to pay for Anthony Gordon

There would have been outrage from fans if Newcastle United had sold Anthony Gordon to Liverpool last month.

But it was something that the Magpies considered, as they went in search of a solution to the PSR nightmare that they found themselves in. In the end, they found a way out through the sales of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson, as well as the departure of Dan Ashworth to Manchester United.

The money they brought in should ensure that Newcastle United avoid a points deduction, but it was very nearly a desperate situation that saw the club consider every possibility to get out of.

One of those was cashing in on a major star, which saw Anthony Gordon linked with a move to Liverpool. A deal did not come to fruition, but there have since been concerns that his head has been turned by the prospect of a return to Merseyside.

That is unlikely to happen this summer, with Newcastle reportedly confident about keeping the 23-year-old at St James’ Park now that the PSR deadline has passed.

Newcastle United wanted to double their money on Anthony Gordon

But selling Gordon was something that Newcastle at least thought about, and it could have become a reality had Liverpool agreed with the Magpies’ valuation of the winger.

However, the Reds felt that Newcastle were asking for too much money.

According to the Athletic, Newcastle wanted more than £80million for Gordon, which resulted in Liverpool not making a formal bid for the England international.

They state that the Magpies were looking to receive well in excess of double what they paid Everton in 2023, when Gordon left Goodison Park for an initial £40million.

Newcastle were not going to let Liverpool grab a bargain

Liverpool considered that to be too much, and it would have been a deal that would have made Gordon Newcastle’s most expensive ever departure.

Instead, that honour belongs to Andy Carroll and Elliot Anderson, both of which left the Magpies for £35million.

While it is really concerning to hear that Newcastle thought about letting Gordon go, it is at least encouraging to note that they were not going to let Liverpool grab a bargain. If they were going to sell Gordon, they were going to sell him for a huge amount of money.

That is a testament to how good he was for the Magpies last season, and how important he has become under Eddie Howe.

Hopefully that importance can continue to grow, with Gordon still having the potential to get even better. Newcastle United need to grow with him, otherwise there will be more speculation about him leaving St James’ Park in the future.
