Granit Xhaka issues 'confident' claim ahead of facing old Arsenal teammates v England

Arsenal stars Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka are set to come up against Granit Xhaka as England play Switzerland in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals.

Xhaka has been outstanding throughout the tournament, with a standout performance against Italy helping Switzerland into the quarter-finals.

It has been a different story for Rice and Saka. Neither have performed badly, but Gareth Southgate’s side as a whole have disappointed in their performances, and the two Arsenal stars have been the subject of criticism.

Xhaka was an injury doubt for the quarter-final clash, but he is now expected to be fit, and with the Bayer Leverkusen star set to come up against some familiar faces, he has expressed his confidence ahead of the tie.

Speaking to German outlet 20min, Xhaka praised the England squad for having so many players in their home domestic league, but claimed that his side will not be overawed by their opposition.

“England has many players who play in their home league compared to other nations. This is what makes it special, because I have already played against many several times from my time in the Premier League,” he stated.

“Basically, however, it is a knockout game for me like any other. We are confident and focus on our strengths, regardless of who is the opponent.”

Xhaka is set to come up against Rice, who replaced him for a club-record fee following his departure last summer.

Both players have excelled for their clubs this season, and the result could even hinge on which player can gain more control of the ball in midfield.

Rice delivered an improved performance against Slovakia, but he will be wary of Xhaka’s quality on the ball, and if the England star can prevent the Leverkusen stalwart from dictating the game, he may give Southgate’s side a better chance of victory.
