‘Had a bit of that at City’: Cole Palmer has shared what he didn’t like doing at Man City

Cole Palmer has undoubtedly proved that moving away from Manchester City has benefited him and his career.

After working his way through the youth ranks at City and making 41 senior appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side, the winger joined Chelsea last summer.

In his debut season at Stamford Bridge, the 22-year-old scored 25 goals and provided 15 assists across the 45 games he appeared in.

This led to Palmer being included in England’s squad for the 2024 European Championship alongside three of his former City teammates.

Now though, the winger has opened up about his career so far and what he feels is the best method to get the best out of him on the pitch, with his period at City getting a mention.

Cole Palmer shares what didn’t suit him at Man City

Speaking in a recent interview shared on the talkSPORT YouTube channel, Palmer had this to say when asked about playing with freedom solely based on his own instinct when starting games rather than coming on as a substitute and feeling the need to impress immediately.

He said: “Maybe a bit against Bosnia, maybe there was a bit of that thinking that it’s a warm-up where you need to impress.

“Had a bit of that at City as well. When I would go on for 20 minutes I’d think I need to do something and it was making me play worse.

“When I’m playing and just not thinking, that’s when I play the best.”

Palmer could have done more to warrant a starting role for City

Out of the 41 senior appearances the Englishman made for City, he only started 13 of them.

Palmer, who Gary Lineker recently named as one of the best young players around right now, then started 40 of the 45 games he featured in for Chelsea last season.

Now that Palmer has admitted that predominantly being a substitute for City wasn’t the best way for the Blues to get the best out of him, it’s a shame that he couldn’t have done more to become a regular starter and fully show his talent, as he has done for Chelsea.
