‘Fearless’ player has been talking to England teammates about joining Liverpool at Euro 2024

Liverpool continue to wait out the conclusion of Euro 2024 before making any concrete moves in the transfer market.

A number of factors have led to the Reds so far deciding not to enter the window, with the summer internationals surely chief among them.

Another reason is likely to be the recent appointment of Arne Slot. With the new head coach yet to work with his existing players at the AXA Training Centre, it makes little sense to add more to the mix.

Nevertheless, there do still appear to be a couple of irons in the fire for Liverpool. Both a new centre-back and potentially another forward could yet be on the agenda.

Some reported targets are still playing at Euro 2024. And as groups of players live and train together during the tournament, talk between them is bound to turn to transfers.

Anthony Gordon pushing for Liverpool transfer

As Slot prepares to welcome his available Liverpool players back to training on Friday, there isn’t too much to note on the transfer front.

Links to the likes of Leny Yoro have gone quiet, for example, while Reds insiders appear to have ruled out a move for Riccardo Calafiori as well.

With those two players seemingly off the table, the most credible links of the summer have come to Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon.

Gordon was reportedly of interest to Liverpool as Newcastle struggled to meet their PSR deadline last Sunday. The 23-year-old ultimately stayed put, though.

But despite his non-move, Gordon is said to have had his ‘head turned‘ by interest from his boyhood club.

That’s something The Telegraph reiterate on Thursday, claiming that the England international’s agent was ‘pushing hard’ to get his client the move of his dreams.

Gordon had reportedly wanted the transfer to go through and is said to have been talking to his England teammates about the possibility of joining Liverpool.

However, the rub is claimed to be that the Reds themselves were merely ‘lukewarm’ in their interest of the former Everton winger. They supposedly failed to make an offer to Newcastle who are now said to be adamant that Gordon is not for sale.

It reportedly ‘remains to be seen’ whether Liverpool look to capitalise on Gordon’s interest during the rest of the summer window. For Newcastle’s part, it’s claimed that they will ‘seek to ensure the player is settled’ upon his return to Tyneside.

Could Liverpool still sign Anthony Gordon?

It is relatively rare that Liverpool will make their interest in a player known if they don’t have a long-term plan behind it.

In our opinion, these tentative enquiries to Newcastle are part of a bigger vision to eventually get Gordon back to the club.

With his contract having just two years to run, Liverpool will know they are in a relatively strong position here. Gordon is clearly very keen indeed on the move and if he does not agree fresh terms at Newcastle then they may have to cash in.

So, we’d argue that this is more one for next summer than this. For the moment, Liverpool are well stocked on the left-wing. Luis Diaz is still around and Cody Gakpo has been showing great form in that position at Euro 2024.

Next year, things might be different. The time may be right to add a player Alan Shearer described as being ‘fearless‘ to the mix.

With Gordon already completely sold on the transfer, it sounds like the tricky bit will be agreeing a deal with Newcastle.
