Report: Eddie Howe and Newcastle United set to miss out on £40m Premier League captain to rival club

The transfer window is gathering pace as Premier League sides, including Newcastle, look to improve their squads ahead of the new season.

Newcastle have been one of the more active Premier League sides in the transfer window so far this summer. More out of necessity, having to frantically scramble to adhere to Profit and Sustainability Rules before June 30th.

The Magpies are set for an overhaul of the squad this summer, with senior players Matt Ritchie, Paul Dummett, Loris Karius and Elliot Anderson all leaving the club, along with highly-rated teenager, Yankuba Minteh.

Eddie Howe has also bolstered his ranks by signing four players in the form of John Ruddy, Odysseas Vlachodimos, Lloyd Kelly and Lewis Hall. However, the Newcastle manager is set to miss out on one of his key targets to a Premier League rival.

Eddie Howe set to miss out on defensive target

One of the positions Newcastle have identified this summer is centre-back, with Wolverhampton Wanderers captain, Max Kilman among the list of targets to help strengthen the Magpies’ defence.

The Telegraph reported Newcastle made a player-plus-cash offer for Kilman in June, however, it was immediately rejected by the Midlands club. Wolves were not interested in the player Newcastle offered, said to be Anderson who has since departed the club for Nottingham Forest.

Kilman is now on the verge of signing for West Ham United for a whopping £40m, as reported by BBC Sport. It will be viewed as a blow to Howe and his backroom staff but further options are being explored by the club.

Kilman was attracted by working with his former manager

A strong reason behind Kilman’s decision to choose West Ham over Newcastle is his relationship with new Hammers boss, Julen Lopetegui, who was manager of Wolves between November 2022 and May 2023.

Kilman joined Wolves from Maidenhead United in 2018 and has made over 150 appearances for the club. Newcastle, meanwhile, will look to other targets with the club linked to AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw. Despite missing out on Kilman, Newcastle are set to be one of the busier clubs in the transfer window as the Magpies look to achieve European football.
