Argentine media deliver verdict on Cristian Romero's performance vs Ecuador at Copa America

Tottenham Hotspur will have to wait upon the return of Cristian Romero this summer after Argentina recorded another victory in the Copa America.

Ange Postecoglou‘s side are getting their pre-season efforts up and running this week as the players return to Hotspur Way this weekend.

It was an impressive 2023/24 campaign for Tottenham in their first season under the Australian with players like Cristian Romero showing their quality.

And the Argentine centre-back has carried that into this summer’s Copa America where the reigning champions look to retain their title.

A semi-final clash now awaits the Tottenham defender after Argentina scraped through on penalties against Ecuador last night.

What the Argentine media said about Cristian Romero’s display

For both his country and club, Romero has established himself as a strong defender who is catching the eye of some of Europe’s top clubs with recent links to reported interest from Real Madrid.

Argentina’s U23 manager Javier Mascherano has recently hailed Romero as one of the best in the world in his position.

He showed that once again on Thursday night in Argentina’s quarter-final clash against Ecuador which ended 1-1 after 90 minutes.

And as Lionel Scaloni’s side booked their spot in the final four, Romero’s display was highlighted by the media in his homeland.

After Argentina booked their spot in the semi finals, TYC Sports shared their verdict on the defender’s performance at the back alongside Lisandro Martinez.

“Once again he was a beast in withstanding the rival attacks. He knew how to play at the limit almost without committing any infractions. It was the night in which they made things the most difficult for him,” wrote journalist Gaston Recondo.

Romero may only have been handed a 6/10 rating, but it was apparent he maintained his usual high standards as he looks to get his hands on his second Copa America title.

Cristian Romero statistics vs Ecuador

Going into the 2024/25 campaign, Romero is going to remain a huge part of Postecoglou’s side as he carries the vice-captaincy from Heung-min Son.

Although he will require a good few weeks of rest after this Copa America tournament before returning, Spurs will be hoping he can pick up from where he left off as he puts in some dazzling displays for Argentina.

  • 90 minutes played
  • 2 clearances
  • 1 blocked shot
  • 5 tackles
  • 5/7 ground duels won
  • 1/1 aerial duels won
  • 94% pass accuracy

Although Spurs will be hoping Romero is ready to go for the new season, they have seen over Euro 2024 that Radu Dragusin would be a solid alternative to start the season in his place.
