"It would not surprise me': There is a 'good chance' that £12m player is going to leave Newcastle - journalist

Newcastle United may still be in the market to sell players this summer, despite the PSR deadline passing.

The end of June was wild for Newcastle United, as the club scrambled to bring in enough money to avoid a breach of profit and sustainability. That would have brought about a possible points deduction, which PIF did not want.

The Magpies looked at every way imaginable to satisfy PSR, and even considered selling Anthony Gordon. Fortunately, it did not come to that, as Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh were sold for almost £70million in total. On top of that, Newcastle received £10million in compensation for Dan Ashworth from Manchester United.

With Newcastle now in a much more positive financial position, they can actually attack the summer transfer window, with new sporting director Paul Mitchell leading the way.

Kieran Trippier’s Newcastle future up in the air

But while the Magpies will now be focussed on incomings, there could still be a few more outgoings from St James’ Park.

That is the view of HITC Football insider Graeme Bailey, who has told Geordie Boot Boys that he thinks the Toon future of Kieran Trippier is one to watch.

“Keep an eye on Kieran Trippier,” he said.

“It would not surprise me at all if he moves. We know that Bayern Munich and AC Milan like him.

“I think there is a good chance that Trippier might go.”

Newcastle have a difficult decision to make regarding Trippier

Trippier is currently away on international duty, representing England at Euro 2024.

But that has not stopped rumours about his future, and it was even suggested that Newcastle considered selling him at the weekend to solve their PSR problem.

Obviously, that did not happen. However, his future at St James’ Park remains up in the air.

That is largely because of his contract situation, with the £12million man entering the final 12 months of his current deal on Tyneside. That means this is the only time to cash in on him and make some money, or risk losing him for nothing in the summer of 2025. Alternatively, they could offer the 33-year-old a new contract.

It is going to be a big decision for Newcastle. On the one hand, Trippier is a leader for the Magpies and one of Eddie Howe’s most trusted lieutenants. On the other, he is decreasing in value in a PSR world and Newcastle already have his long-term replacement in Tino Livramento.

Whether he stays or goes, Trippier’s future will not be resolved until after the Euros. He is preparing for England’s next game, with the Three Lions set to face Switzerland in the quarter final on Saturday evening.

Trippier has started every game at the Euros so far, but that could potentially change this weekend as Gareth Southgate ponders switching to a back three and deploying wing-backs.
