Who is Yerson Mosequera? The potential heir to Max Kilman’s throne

Everything you need to know about Yerson Mosquera, Wolves’ potential ready-made replacement for Max Kilman.

A big change is set to happen again at Molineux this summer. Captain Kilman is set to depart for West Ham after a £40 million bid was accepted.

The departure of the defender will no doubt leave a big gap, not just in the dressing room, but also in the back line.

Kilman did not miss a game last season in the Premier League and was a permanent fixture in the starting XI.

However, the club may already have a ready-made replacement for the Englishman at the club with Mosquera returning from his loan spell in Spain.

What is Yerson Mosquera’s age and height?

Mosquera was born on May 2, 2001. At the time of writing this makes him 23 years old. He also stands at 1.88 metres which is six foot two inches.

Where was he born?

Mosquera was born in Apartado, Colombia.

When did Yerson Mosquera sign for Wolves?

Wolves purchased the centre-back in June 2021 under the rein of Bruno Lage. Mosquera signed a five-year deal after finding success in his home country at Atletico Nacional.

He has since been at the Old Gold and made his debut against Tottenham in the Carabao Cup before being forced off injured.

How much did he cost?

It is believed that Wolves paid £4.5 million for Mosquera back in 2021 to acquire his services.

Who has Yerson Mosquera been on loan to?

Since recovering from his injury against Spurs, Mosquera was sent out on loan to MLS side FC Cincinnati in January 2023.

This loan spell lasted a full calendar year and the defender won the Supporters Sheild.

After impressing in the USA, Mosquera then earned a six-month loan move to Spanish side Villarreal where he impressed again both in Europe and in La Liga.

His presence at the back saw the Spanish side completely turn their season around, only losing two games after he joined in January 2024.

Yes, Mosquera’s form out on loan earned him his first caps for his country. He made his debut for Colombia in 2023 and has made three appearances.

Mosquera was also in the provisional squad for the 2024 Copa America but was left out of the tournament itself.

Is Yerson Mosquera good?

For the 2024/25 campaign, Mosquera could easily be like a new signing for Wolves. Statistically, the defender was exceptional for Villarreal and outshone Craig Dawson and Kilman in multiple areas.

For example, the Colombian won 1.79 tackles per 90 minutes, as well as cleared the ball at a rate of 5.00. Both of these are higher than Dawson and Kilman.

As a result, while he was at Villarreal, Mosquera received widespread praise from the Spanish media. One outlet, AS, claimed that he was a ‘beast’ with ‘tremendous potential’

Will Wolves keep Yerson Mosquera?

This summer, Wolves may face a challenge to keep hold of the defender. Gary O’Neil had hinted that there was a role for Mosquera for the summer. Therefore, he is likely to be assessed in pre-season.

However, Villarreal are also pressing to sign the defender. It is believed that the Spanish giants are ‘working overtime’ to secure Mosquera’s signature this summer.

Regardless, with Kilman set to depart, it does seem unlikely that Wolves would allow the Colombian to leave before a new face arrives.
