Report: Steve Cooper now told how much spending money he'll have at Leicester City this summer

Leicester City will have to spend wisely with their transfer budget this summer.

New Leicester City boss Steve Cooper has a big task on his hands ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League season.

Star midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has already departed the club to join back up with former Foxes boss Enzo Maresca, who left following Leicester City’s Championship winning campaign.

However, Cooper’s progress to try and make his first signings of the summer have not been halted as they look to sign a defender from abroad.

The Foxes were interested in bringing Belgian defender Arthur Theate to the King Power, but are now set to sign Atalanta defender Caleb Okoli for over £12m.

Although Leicester City are handing over a sizeable fee for the young Italian centre back, the Foxes will still have leftover money to potentially allow them to target more signings this summer.

Leicester City likely to have ‘a bit of money to play with’ in summer transfer window

Cooper will not need to be too frugal when eyeing up players ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League season.

The former Nottingham Forest boss will reportedly have a budget in the area of £50m this summer to spend, per Leicester Mercury.

Jordan Blackwell on Leicester Mercury said: “£50m seems closest to what it will be.

“We know they’re about to spend £14m on Fatawu and there will need to be a handful of signings beyond that to get the squad in shape for a battle for survival.

“With the promise of Premier League TV payments throughout the season, there will be a bit of money to play with.

“But the club are still reeling from relegation, they’ve still got a big wage bill to deal with, and they’ve still got to be mindful of PSR going forward.”

Will Leicester City’s budget stretch to sign proven goalscorer

Cooper has clearly prioritised reinforcements in his backline, as shown from the players he has targeted so far in the summer window.

However, the need for a proven goalscorer is clear this campaign.

Despite being Leicester City’s top scorer last season, a 37-year-old Jamie Vardy will be unlikely to hit the heights of half a decade ago, although he can still certainly do a job from off the bench.

Former Barcelona striker Martin Braithwaite is currently a target with a reported price tag of £500,000, however he has very little pedigree when it comes to being clinical in the Premier League.

Although PSR may limit their ability to go above and beyond in signing proven Premier League quality, the need for a striker at the King Power is crucial.

Following the potential signings of Abdul Fatawu and Okoli, a striker must be prioritised in order to give the Foxes the best chance of survival in the Premier League.
