Benni McCarthy sends message to Lisandro Martinez after Copa America performance

Lisandro Martinez is the man of the moment in Argentina after scoring his first goal for his country.

The Manchester United centre-back produced a towering performance in the Copa America quarter-final, giving his side the lead against Ecuador.

A last minute equaliser forced extra-time, with Argentina winning on penalties despite a miss from Lionel Messi.

Manchester United fans were impressed by Martinez’s performance, excited to see ‘The Butcher’ performing at his best, after a tough injury-hit season.

Lisandro Martinez praised

Lisandro Martinez’s Argentina teammate Alejandro Garnacho, an unused substitute, reached out on social media to praise his fellow Manchester United star.

The Argentine media also reserved special praise for the centre-back, with the team now reaching the Copa America semi-finals.

There was also a message of praise from Benni McCarthy, whose departure from the Manchester United coaching staff is soon expected to be confirmed amid a reshuffle.

McCarthy wrote on Instagram: “Congratulations good brother, very happy for you and your national team 🇦🇷 what a great header 🫶🏽🔥 strong hug.”

Lisandro Martinez one of the best in the world

Lisandro Martinez is using the Copa America to demonstrate he is one of the best centre-backs in world football.

Argentina have conceded only one goal in four matches during the Copa America so far, with Martinez playing a key role as a starter.

Manchester United suffered when he was out with injury last season, before he returned for the final few matches, including the FA Cup final.

Despite a mentally and physically testing campaign for the defender, Martinez could end the season with a FA Cup winners medal and a Copa America champion, to add to his World Cup win.
