The European Commission is calling on the US internet giant Amazon to provide more information on the transparency of certain recommendation systems used by the shopping platform.

The systems use artificial intelligence, for example, to collect data from consumers and recommend additional products.

The commission has now submitted a request for information on the basis of the EU's Digital Services Act. The US company must also clarify what options it offers users to opt out of the creation of profiles for such recommendation systems.

Amazon said it will examine the application and work closely with the European Commission. An Amazon spokesman said the company shares the Brussels authority's goal of creating "a safe, predictable and trustworthy shopping environment."

Amazon said it is investing heavily in protecting customers from bad actors and illegal content.

Amazon must provide the requested information by July 26, and the commission will determine the next steps based on the answers. The authority can impose fines if a company provides false, incomplete or misleading information, or refuses to answer the questions.
